Laboratories and Equipment
The Institute for Biomedical Optics boasts a modern research infrastructure equipped with state-of-the-art instruments for optical and biomedical measurements. This is complemented by innovative systems and research setups developed in-house, which we use to develop and test new technologies and measurement methods.
Our infrastructure is not limited to our own research. We are open to scientific collaborations and joint research projects, as well as to the use of selected equipment and systems by external partners.

Confocal Laser Scanning Microscope
Leica STELLARIS WLL
The Institute of Biomedical Optics has a high-performance Leica STELLARIS 5 WLL confocal laser scanning microscope available for biomedical and biophotonics research projects. The system was acquired as part of the DFG’s Large-Scale Research Equipment Program (INST 392/172-1 FUGG) and subsequently upgraded.
The equipment includes an inverted Leica DMi8 research microscope, a pulsed white-light laser, and an additional 405-nm laser. The flexibly adjustable excitation range extends up to 790 nm, allowing for optimal adaptation to different fluorophores. Three highly sensitive Power-HyD-S detectors enable high-sensitivity multicolor spectral measurements. TauSense additionally provides lifetime-based contrast and separation techniques.
The system enables high-resolution 2D and 3D fluorescence imaging, Z-stacks, time series, and spectral measurements. LIGHTNING deconvolution, stitching, and 3D reconstruction expand the possibilities for quantitative image analysis.
The microscope is operated centrally at the Institute for Biomedical Optics and is available not only to research groups at the University of Lübeck but also to external users as part of scientific collaborations.
