Start-up Visotec founded for commercializing home-monitoring OCT

Scientists and engineers of the Medical Laser Center Lübeck founded the start-up Visotec GmbH (https://visotec.health) for commercializing an new Optical coherence tomography (OCT) solutions for home-monitoring, which was developed in the group of Gereon Hüttmann at the Institute of Biomedical Optics (BMO) (https://www.bmo.uni-luebeck.de/forschung/ag-huettmann/forschung/oct-heimdiagnostik-fuer-die-amd-verlaufskontrolle.html).

OCT has changed diagnosis in ophthalmology. Especially the treatment of retinal diseases by intravitreal injection of anti-VEGF drugs is today based on OCT imaging. Currently, OCT is only available in ophthalmic clinics and practices due size, complexity and high cost of the devices. Full-field-OCT does not need expensive optic and scanning mirrors and will cut size and cost of devices by an order of magnitude. This enables daily SELF (Self-Examination Low-Cost Full-Field)-OCT of patient improving the treatment with regular intravitreal injections of anti-VEGF drugs.
