40 Years Medical Laser Center Lübeck – 20+1 Years Institute of Biomedical Optics

A special day for biophotonics in Lübeck: Together with the Medical Laser Center Lübeck (MLL GmbH), the Institute of Biomedical Optics (BMO) at the University of Lübeck (UzL) celebrated the MLL’s 40th anniversary as well as the BMO’s 20+1-year anniversary.

The event’s theme was “Past to Future - Biophotonics for Life,” and impressively demonstrated how closely excellent basic research, clinical application, and successful technology transfer are connected in Lübeck.

We were honored to welcome numerous high-ranking guests from the fields of science, politics, and industry. Opening remarks at the ceremony were delivered by Prof. Dr. Helge Braun, President of the University of Lübeck; Dr. Olaf Taurus, State Secretary at the Ministry of Justice and Health of the State of Schleswig-Holstein; and Monika Frank, Senator for Education and Culture of the Hanseatic City of Lübeck.

The keynote lecture, “Photonics for Life – How Biophotonics Makes Medicine More Precise, Faster, and More Personalized,” was delivered by Prof. Dr. Juergen Popp of Friedrich Schiller University Jena and the Leibniz Institute for Photonic Technologies in Jena. Prof. Dr. Daniel Palanker from Stanford University delivered the keynote address titled “Prosthetic Vision with a Photovoltaic Substitute for Lost Photoreceptors.” We also welcomed numerous long-standing scientific and clinical collaborators of the BMO and MLL.

Another highlight was the series of scientific talks, ranging from the early days of laser medicine through current cutting-edge research to future developments in biophotonics. This showed how successfully knowledge and technology are being transferred from Lübeck into clinical practice and innovative companies.

A heartfelt thank you to all guests, speakers, partners, as well as all staff and alumni who made this day an unforgettable anniversary celebration.
