The Thomas-Fredenhagen-Prize for Innovation was awarded to PD Dr. Ramtin Rahmanzadeh from the Institute of Biomedical Optics. The prize was awarded for the successful establishment of the business cooperation with Porphyrin-Laboratories GmbH with the project "Freshness sensor for intelligent food packaging". The sensor foil, which was developed together with Dr. Christian Schell, indicates whether packaged food is still edible. The development can thus make a valuable contribution to avoiding food waste and increasing food safety.

The prize is awarded by the Kaufmannschaft zu Lübeck, the Professor Hans-Heinrich Otte Foundation and the University of Lübeck. It is awarded for special achievements and activities in the field of technology transfer.

The cooperation is supported by the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture.
