The Future of Optics in Lübeck: Launch of the New SPIE Student Chapter to Support Emerging Researchers

In the research hub of Lübeck, emerging researchers are now joining forces: With the official founding of the “SPIE Student Chapter Lübeck,” a new platform is being created for undergraduate and graduate students in the fields of optics and photonics.

SPIE is the world’s leading international society for optics and photonics, connecting over 350,000 researchers, engineers, and industry representatives from around the globe each year. Through renowned conferences, educational programs, and scientific publications, it forms the backbone of global knowledge exchange in photonics.

Around the world, SPIE Student Chapters serve as dynamic, student-led hubs within this network. They offer young scientists the opportunity to develop leadership skills and build professional networks that extend far beyond their own campus while still in school. Through workshops, field trips, and exchanges with experienced experts, these communities bridge the gap between academic theory and international research practice. This opens up exclusive networking opportunities for members, as well as access to international scholarships and career fairs in the field of photonics.

A key focus of the Lübeck chapter is the close integration of research between the Institute for Biomedical Optics (BMO) at the University of Lübeck and the Lübeck Medical Laser Center (MLL). “Our goal is to create an environment, especially for young scientists, in which networking is not just a buzzword but is actively practiced through international collaborations,” explain the founding members. In addition to fostering exchange at the doctoral level, the chapter will play a central role in mentoring and organizing undergraduate and graduate students. Subject-specific workshops and mentoring programs are planned to facilitate entry into biomedical research.

The new association has already recorded its first successful “outreach activity”: At the University of Lübeck’s annual student conference, the chapter spent two days presenting its goals and the work of SPIE. The chapter was represented on site by Michel Wunderlich, Vice President Gerrit Meußler, and Chapter President Henrik Volkens, who were able to spark interest in optics research among young scientists through numerous discussions.

Interested students and doctoral candidates are cordially invited to join the chapter and actively help shape the future of photonics in Lübeck.
