Thomas Fredenhagen Prize 2019 goes to Prof. Dr. Gereon Hüttmann - Congratulations

The Thomas Fredenhagen Prize of the Professor Hans-Heinrich Otte-Stiftung and the Kaufmannschaft zu Lübeck was awarded this year for transfer and economic cooperation. It goes to Prof. Dr. Gereon Hüttmann from the Institute of Biomedical Optics at the University of Lübeck. Gereon Hüttmann is awarded for his projects on optical coherence tomography (OCT). The prize for young scientists goes to Prof. Dr. Floris Ernst from the Institute of Robotics and Cognitive Systems for the development. The award was presented by Hartmut Richter, president of the Lübeck Kaufmannschaft, and Dr. Dietrich Dehnen of the Professor Hans-Heinrich Otte Foundation.

The laudation says:

Prof. Hüttmann has acquired an outstanding expertise in the field of coherence tomography (OCT), a three-dimensional imaging method, through innovative research and his outstanding scientific achievements, which formed the basis for the economic cooperation agreement with Thorlabs in 2005. Thorlabs GmbH is the market leader in optical components, a global company with more than 1000 employees and sales of $200 million.

Within the framework of this sustainable and successful cooperation, in which approximately 7 million Euro in third-party funds were raised, a novel combination of OCT with digital holography was developed that overcomes the basic limitations of OCT imaging. Three new applications with high potential have been demonstrated with this technology in the last three years.

1. Imaging of the human retina with computational correction of defocus and image errors.

2. Interferometric measurement of the pulsation of the retina, which can be used for the diagnosis of various eye diseases.

3. Measurement of intrinsic optical signals (IOS) in photoreceptor and ganglion cells, which makes visual physiology studies possible.

Through the close exchange and cooperation with institutes and clinics of the BioMedTech Science Campus Lübeck, the topics of the cooperation were integrated into the profile areas of the University of Lübeck. The cooperation has resulted in numerous international publications, 20 patent applications, 2 completed and 3 ongoing PhD theses. This ensures international visibility far beyond the BioMedTec science campus and leads to new international contacts.

The award of the Thomas Fredenhagen Prize of the Kaufmannschaft zu Lübeck honours Prof. Hüttmann's services to the economic cooperation with Thorlabs and the associated reputation for the Institute of Biomedical Optics and the University of Lübeck.
