The human ocular system, the construction and function of ophthalmic instruments, and the interaction of the two, e.g. in clinical applications are taught in lectures, presentations and laboratory courses. (annually in summer semester)


Bachelor-Seminar Medical Engineering - ME 3702

English speaking seminar, in which the students will write a scientific article in the context of Biomedical Optics, review the articles of other students, and finally present their work in an oral presentation at the Biophotonics conference (each winter and summer).


Optical imaging diagnostic - Lecture+Exercise - ME 4180

Optical imaging is becoming increasingly important in medical diagnostics. In this lecture, students learn about the physical basics of optical imaging and its application in medicine. Seminar presentation of the students with written elaboration deepen the understanding. Among other things, the following topics are treated: coherent and incoherent imaging, tissue optics, endoscopy, fluorescence diagnostics, diffuse-optical tomography, molecular imaging, OCT and their applications in the various medical disciplines (every summer term).

The lecture introduces the basics of modern optics and photonics. Students will learn the essential concepts of optics (geometric optics, wave optics, quantum optics) and the functioning and application of the most important photonic devices. Special emphasis is put on light generation, detection, imaging and microscopy. In regular exercises the material is deepened by means of concrete examples (every summer term).


Introduction into the basic biological laboratory techniques for engineers - ME 2200

The course teaches the application of basic biological laboratory techniques for engineers. These techniques include cell culture, antibody fluorescence labeling, protein quantification, immunostaining, fluorescence microscopy, flow cytometry

Interdisciplinary Advanced Seminar Intravital Two Photon Microscopy

This seminar, which is organised together with the Institute of Anatomy, discusses current topics of two-photon microscopy with special focus on intravital imaging. Both technical aspects as well as current research results obtained using two-photon microscopy are topics of the lectures (every winter and summer term).

In this lecture series, scientists from the Institute of Biomedical Optics will first give an overview of lasers, laser-tissue interaction, and specific applications in laser medicine. Mechanisms of photobiology and photomedicine – Course ME4140

One-week course at the end of every winter semester with lectures and practical parts to learn about physical as well as biological thermal effects on cells and tissues.
Hands-on laboratory work focuses on the cell biological effects of heat, including cell vitality, wound healing and metabolic states.(each winter)


Microscopic optical methods - ME 4220

One-week course at the end of each winter semester containing lectures paired with "hands on" practical parts. Topics are the optics of the microscope, Fourier optics and coherent filtering, phase and differential interference contrast, fluorescence, confocal, two-photon, and optical coherence microscopy, as well as laser-based microscopic procurement of biological specimens (each winter).

Advanced Seminar Optical coherence tomography

Current research results on all aspects of optical coherence tomography (OCT) from the scientific basis, technology and applications will be presented by local and international speakers. The seminar is aimed at students, scientists, physicians and employees of local companies. It is an open discussion forum, which is especially intended to strengthen the cooperation of different academic groups of the university with clinicians and companies (every winter and summer term).

Cell manipulation with optical methods - ME4190

The course teaches basic mechanisms of photothermal and photochemically induced biological processes and shows different uses of optical technologies for diagnosis and therapy. The course consists of lectures as well as practical experiments.
